Paws For Thought
The results of the National Dog Survey have tails wagging!
Labradors have been crowned the nation’s favourite dog in a new poll, sponsored by People’s Postcode Lottery.
Dogs Trust’s 2025 National Dog Survey is the ultimate guide to our four-legged friends, revealing that Poppy and Teddy are the most common dog names overall.
In fact, Dogs Trust estimates there could be as many as 20,000 labs named Poppy or Teddy in the UK.
The survey - which received more than 340,000 responses - also shows a rise in the nation’s love for Dachshunds, with the breed entering the top ten most popular among newly-acquired dogs for the first time.

Crossbreeds - a dog whose parents are two different breeds - make up 42% of dogs in the UK.
- Cockapoos (Cocker Spaniel x Poodle),
- Cavapoos (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel x Poodle),
- Labradoodles (Labrador x Poodle), and
- Lurchers (a Greyhound, Whippet or Saluki crossed with another breed of dog such as a Collie or Terrier)

The survey also shines a light on the habits of dog owners who dedicate an average of two hours and 12 minutes a day to their pooch's needs, including walking, grooming and feeding.
But the National Dog Survey is more than just a snapshot of our favourite breeds and names. It also plays an important role in helping Dogs Trust shape its services to reflect the needs of owners across the UK.
Postcode Lottery players have raised more than £26 Million for Dogs Trust since 2013.

Owen Sharp, Chief Executive of Dogs Trust, said: "With thousands of responses, the National Dog Survey paints a picture of the nation's ever-changing relationship with its canine companions.
“It is a vital tool to help us understand the impact of dogs, the challenges, and the joy of dog ownership.
“The results of the National Dog Survey will help Dogs Trust to continue to tailor our services to meet and support the real needs of dog owners and ensure that every dog has the best chance at finding their forever home."
